Nagapada Thali

The serpent guardian of sacred groves

Protector of the Sacred Groves

The Nagapada Thali is one of the most spiritually significant ornaments in Kerala's jewellery tradition. Its centrepiece is the nagapada, the hooded serpent, a symbol of protection, fertility, and the kundalini energy that resides within every living being. In Kerala, snake worship (Nagaradhana) is deeply woven into the culture, and most ancestral homes maintain a serpent grove (Sarpa Kavu) within their compound. The Nagapada Thali translates this reverence into gold. The serpent hood is rendered in fine detail using the repousse technique, where gold is hammered from the reverse side to create a raised, three-dimensional form. Traditionally worn as a marriage pendant, it signifies the divine protection that the serpent deities extend over the household. The necklace is strung on a gold chain or a traditional black-bead mangalsutra cord, depending on the community's customs.
