Manga Mala

The sacred mango motif necklace

The Mango That Adorns

The Manga Mala takes its name from "manga," the Malayalam word for mango, and features a chain of mango-shaped or paisley pendants linked in gold. The mango is considered sacred in Hindu tradition, symbolising fertility, abundance, and the sweetness of life. In Kerala, the mango motif appears in temple architecture, Kasavu saree borders, and most prominently in the Manga Mala necklace. Each paisley unit is handcrafted using a combination of die-stamping and hand-finishing, with some versions featuring ruby or emerald accents at the centre of each mango. The Manga Mala is traditionally worn by both men and women during temple ceremonies and weddings, making it one of the most versatile pieces in the Kerala jewellery canon.
